MIAMI OPEN: Forty Years of Great Tennis

The Miami Open celebrated 40 years in 2025 after the inaugural tournament was played in 1985.

Founded by former player and ex-ecutive director of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) in the 1980s Butch Bucholtz. The first tournament was held in February 1985 at LaVer’s International Tennis Resort in Delray Beach. Then it moved to Boca West in 1986 before the tournament was moved again to its long-term home in Key Biscayne from 1987 to 2018. Since 2019 except for a postponed 2020 tournament due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the tournament is held at Hard Rock Stadium.

The 40th Miami Open had a memorable 15 days of tennis, with Jakub Menšík being crowned the men’s singles champion, the first professional title for the 19-year-old Czech. On the women’s side WTA No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka won her 19th career title and first in Miami, retaining her top ranking.

This year’s Miami Open continued to break attendance records each year a full-capacity tournament has been held (2019, 2022-25). This year’s event was no different as the Miami Open topped 400,000 in attendance for the first time, with 405,448 attendees.
The 2026 Miami Open will take place March 15 – 29, once again returning to the iconic Hard Rock Stadium. If you haven’t attended the tournament yet make your plans for next year.
