A Maya Tz’utujil artist, Juan Batista Novichoc, will set up an altar to recreate and perform a mock-ceremony for cleansing and new beginnings. Wearing his traditional attire and using incense, aromatic woods, and incense burners, he will demonstrate the ritual, followed by a talk explaining its meaning and the deeper significance behind it.
“It is a legacy that we must not lose; rather we must cultivate it through art and other actions today.
Premier of Artisan Jewelry
The complete line of amulets and talismans designed by Elmar Rojas will make its premier showing in our museum event. Meet Mayari Rojas, President of the Elmar Rojas Foundation.
Rojas engages deeply with Guatemala’s ancestral roots, weaving into his visual language elements of ritual, the sacred, and everyday life. His figures like the Andasolo or his Scarecrows, colors, and compositions evoke ceremonies, mythologies, and gestures passed down through generations.
