On most nights in Delray Beach’s Pineapple Grove Arts District, the lights inside Arts Garage signal that something is about to begin — a jazz performance, a theatre production, an art exhibition, or a community program that brings residents and visitors together around creativity.
Fifteen years after opening its doors, Arts Garage has grown from a promising community arts experiment into one of Delray Beach’s most established cultural institutions.
Since launching in 2011, the nonprofit venue has built a reputation for presenting internationally recognized musicians, contemporary theatre, visual art exhibitions, and educational programming in a setting that emphasizes proximity between artist and audience. For many locals, it has become a familiar part of the city’s cultural rhythm.
As Arts Garage marks its 15th anniversary this April, the milestone offers a chance to reflect on how the organization has matured — and how it has grown into a significant player in South Florida’s arts ecosystem.
A PERIOD OF TRANSFORMATION
While the venue’s early years established its identity as an intimate performance space, the organization’s most significant period of growth began in 2016, when Marjorie Waldo stepped in as President and CEO.
Since then, Arts Garage has undergone a notable transformation behind the scenes. Legacy debt was eliminated, and substantial financial reserves were established, enabling the nonprofit to stabilize its finances and focus on long-term sustainability. Its annual operating budget has increased by more than 40 percent, and ticket revenue has grown by over 60 percent.

Support from the City of Delray Beach and the Cultural Council for Palm Beach County has helped strengthen that foundation and ensure that diverse programming continues to reach audiences across the region.
Today, Arts Garage operates as a multidisciplinary arts hub presenting more than 300 performances, classes, exhibitions, and community programs each year, welcoming over 31,000 attendees annually while featuring hundreds of professional and emerging artists.
Audience data also reflects the venue’s growing regional draw. Recent surveys show patrons traveling from 183 ZIP codes across 149 cities, 18 states, and three countries, underscoring Arts Ga-rage’s reputation as a cultural destination in South Florida.
AN INTIMATE STAGE WITH GLOBAL REACH
What has remained constant throughout that growth is the venue’s distinctive performance environment.
Inside Arts Garage’s cabaret-style theatre, audiences sit just feet from the stage, creating a sense of immediacy that performers often describe as rare on the touring circuit. The format encourages a natural exchange between artist and audience that larger venues often struggle to replicate.
That atmosphere has helped the venue attract a steady stream of accomplished musicians across jazz, blues, world music, and contemporary genres.
This spring, 11-time Grammy Award-winning bassist, composer, and bandleader Christian McBride will perform at Arts Garage for the first time on April 25, bringing one of the most influential figures in modern jazz to Delray Beach.

EXPANDING THE STAGE
Arts Garage’s programming has expanded significantly in recent years, reflecting a broader vision of what a community arts venue can offer.
One of the organization’s newest initiatives is Out of the Black Box, a theatre residency program that supports professional theatre companies without permanent performance space. The program provides rehearsal space, production resources, and performance opportunities while encouraging community engagement through workshops and open rehearsals.
The venue has also introduced Off the Wall: From Canvas to Con-versation, a seasonal talk series that brings artists, curators, and cultural voices together to explore the stories and ideas behind contemporary art.
Visual arts remain another cornerstone of the venue’s programming. Recent exhibitions such as Good Trouble, curated by Marjorie Waldo, highlight the role art can play in social dialogue while providing a platform for emerging and established artists.
Education and outreach initiatives further extend the organization’s impact. Through the Arts Garage Artists-in-Residence (AiR) program, visiting artists lead workshops, master classes, and lectures designed to connect audiences with the creative process.
Programs such as heARTfelt support individuals and families experiencing housing instability across Palm Beach County with food, supplies, and other essential resources, while the Senior Series provides year-round arts programming for older adults through outreach classes and community partnerships.

For younger audiences, PLACES! A Summer Theatre Camp introduces students ages 8 to 15 to acting, improvisation, musical theatre, and stagecraft through a four-week summer program culminating in live performances.
Together, these initiatives reflect Arts Garage’s evolving role not only as a performance venue but also as a cultural hub connecting artists and community members across generations.
THE NEXT ACT
Arts Garage has become an integral part of Delray Beach’s creative landscape. Beyond its artistic contributions, the organization generates a measurable economic impact. A recent analysis estimates that Arts Garage contributes more than $3.8 million annually to the regional economy, driven by audience spending at local businesses, employment, and cultural tourism.
To mark its 15th anniversary, Arts Garage will host several celebratory events this spring, including Arts Garage’s 15th Anniversary Party with 70s Jukebox: A Fundraiser for PLACES! Summer Camp on Friday, May 29, 2026.
After fifteen years, Arts Garage has proven that a community-driven arts & culture organization can become a vibrant civic hub — a place where artists, audiences, and ideas meet, and where the cultural life of Delray Beach continues to take shape.
